A Quick Blue Jays Happy Hour Announcement!

Leaping into the mid-2010s...

After years of trying to make Blue Jays Happy Hour work in conjunction with different companies and in different formats—and, occasionally, trying to make ourselves ad salesmen, which we certainly are not—Nick and I have decided to take the leap into the mid-2010s and start a Patreon page for the show—patreon.com/BJHH—where members will be able to hear ad-free episodes and a weekly bonus show.

What does that mean for anyone that wants to continue enjoying the show the way they’ve become accustomed? Absolutely nothing.

Our weekly episodes will continue as normal, and you’ll be able to find them in exactly the same places you always have—no need to switch feeds or do anything technical here. You simply will now have the option of paying just $6 per month (CAD) over on Patreon to get our members only feed, where (again) the main show will be ad-free and you’ll also get a bonus episode each week.

I’ll be honest here. This is a move that I am very confident is the right one for the show, but that I’ve been wary of making for quite some time. I have such great, loyal support from my readers at Substack, and I certainly don’t like the feeling of trying to get my hand too deep into anybody’s pocket—least of all the very people who make it possible for me to do what I do. Nor do I want to upset anyone who has been so generous to me over the years. So, if you’re a paid subscriber here and feel aggrieved by this idea, please don’t hesitate to reach out and we can work something out.

That said, I started this site way back in January 2021 and haven’t changed the price of membership despite—*wildly gestures at the cost of living*—everything, so this is a way to avoid doing that without taking anything away from anybody. More importantly, though, it’s a way to make Nick whole.

If we were to move the show behind Substack’s paywall, there’s really no good way to decide how to split any revenue—we wouldn’t know who is subscribing for Nick’s work and who is subscribing for mine. This way is cleaner, simpler, and for listeners is purely optional.

Below you can hear Nick and I make the announcement, then briefly discuss what this all means, and what you can expect if you do decide to support us over on Patreon. Later on in the week we’ll drop episode 181, plus our first ever bonus show.
