Deadline day 4:30 PM UPDATE: "No significant structural damage" for Bichette
There’s not a ton to say at this stage, as the minutes count down toward 6 PM ET, and I don’t want to inundate anyone’s inbox with a bunch of small posts here, but I think it’s worth sharing for those who haven’t yet heard that the news on Bo Bichette’s injured knee is pretty good.
Manager John Schneider told spoke to reporters prior to tonight’s game and explained that an MRI on Bo's right knee revealed "no significant structural damage," just some inflammation.
I'm a little uneasy about the fact that it's been made clear that the phrasing was included the word significant — implying that there might be some amount of damage — and the fact that Schneider would only go as far as saying "we'll know more in the next day or so" regarding Bo's status — an IL stint hasn't been ruled out, but for now he's day-to-day — but the fact that Schneider also called it the "best possible outcome" is certainly more comforting.
And, given some of the thoughts I'm sure we all had when we watched him pull up on Monday, completely understandable.
Santiago Espinal will get the start at shortstop for the Jays here on Tuesday, so I guess he's not getting moved before the deadline! The newly-acquired Paul DeJong will be on hand Wednesday, and will presumably end up getting some run (whether Bo lands on the IL or not).
Ernie Clement is with the club as part of the taxi squad, but as yet no move has been announced to add either him or Hyun Jin Ryu to the roster. All will be revealed soon enough! But as far as the trade deadline goes, the best thing possible for the Jays has already happened. Bo didn’t snap his ACL! Consider the day a win.
Now go get a bat!
