It doesn't seem to jive with their outward personna, but if you think back to signing Morales so early, Kikuchi right after the lockout ended and then being the first to make a big trade this off-season? They also don't mind handing out contracts that seem to be too long.
It does suck that they felt the need to trade a piece like Teo largely to free up cash. I think an underrated issue is what you mentioned above, that they're paying 4 starting pitchers real money and 3 of them either had terrible years or are injured. I was hopeful they'd be able to spend their way out of this problem but it always seemed kinda unlikely that they would have the payroll to do it without subtracting. I feel like this trade doesn't happen if Berrios had been good and Kikuchi looked like a reasonable #5 instead of a trainwreck.
