MLB’s annual GM meetings took place in Carlsbad, California, this week, and though the Blue Jays didn’t get any deals done, the landscape of available players certainly came into sharper focus.
Intrigued by getting someone new at 2B still. César Hernandez, José Igesias? Sonny Gray is a good target for trade, what of picking up Jon Gray? Seems like a Pete Walker candidate to me if he comes at a decent price. My most intriguing thought yet, working a trade with Grichuk for Dallas Keuchel?
Yeah, I definitely think Gray could be a "Pete Walker special" type. Sounds like they did tried for that with Andrew Heaney. I think they have to aim higher than those guys for 2B, and I'm actually fine with Biggio getting a lot of reps to start -- he's better there defensively than at 3B, needs to show if his bad 2021 was just a product of injuries, and there are a lot of interesting options behind him in the system now (Santiago Espinal, Kevin Smith, Otto López, Samad Taylor, etc.). Keuchel is an interesting option since it's all wasted money for both teams anyway, but I'm not confident he's going to bounce back this time (and don't love those low strikeout numbers), and not sure the White Sox would see the value in bringing in Grichuk.
Just not sure the Jays can aim high for a new SP (or Ray) and also do so for a 2B/3B. I'd take the compromise of a veteran with good defense for the latter.
