The Blue Jays made big news this week in several ways, with the club coming to terms on a seven-year, $131 million extension with starter José Berríos, his teammate Robbie Ray taking home the American League Cy Young award, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
FWIW, given the opt-out, it wouldn't make sense to have the Berrios contract structured with lower in then two last years; he'd just opt out and get paid what he's worth on the market.
I mean, he might still do that anyway. I don't know if the those two years being worth $48 million instead of $40 million or whatever is going to make all that much of a difference. The bigger thing is probably the fact that it's riskier for the Jays in that if he's not going to be worth that at the time on the open market they're stuck with him at a higher salary than if they'd structured the deal differently.
