He's from California, lived in the Bay area for a long time, and his home is near the Giants spring training site. He didn't want to live/play in Toronto - simple as that. And that's fair enough. I sometimes think we can all be naive about why players don't always accept the best financial offer. It's not always about money. I'm still amazed we've attracted Ryu/Springer/Gausman/Bassit to be honest.
"[He's] tie[d] up so much money as to make it impossible to fix the Cronenberg-esque roster he’s pointlessly cobbled together."
Perfectly sums up Atkins' offseason. No other grade possible than a big red F. IKF, KK, and Turner have blocked actually impactful improvements. The only big move of the season - Rodriguez - has more question marks over him than the Riddler.
No excuse possible for missing out on both Chapman and Bellinger. At those prices, the team absolutely should have signed both of them. An outfield of Bellinger, Varsho, Springer looks elite. An infield of Chapman, Bo, Davis/Biggio, Vlad looks solid to elite.
Just a staggering disappointment to layer on top of the heart-wrending exit from last season. At this point, I don't even care if Atkins is fired, the damage is done, and whoever takes over isn't going to be able to fix it. All the eggs are in the "hope everything goes right, everyone has a career year, and nobody gets hurt" basket which like, this is baseball - what are the odds lol.
Can't help but think that there's something else going on with Chapman's not signing with Toronto. It seems that Kiner-Falefa's signing was a clear breakup for them, because I don't believe a player that wanted to stay with the team would have taken less money to move out to the West Coast.
Fangraphs 3rd base power rankings issued today:
Jays - #23 - Projected for 2.3 WAR
Giants - #10 - Projected for 3.6 WAR even AFTER dumping JD Davis
I know Chappy didn't want to come back, but this still stings...
Like Cronenberg’s future in eXistenZ, the people demand more New Flesh.

At least playing in San Francisco he'll probably have a lower OPS than IKF.
