I'd like to hear Nick's take on this as he was always keen for extending Hernandez. This trade is worthy of a podcast! Do you know when the next one is and please let it be Australian time zone friendly!
My main takeaway is that losing good players sucks. I know we can't look at this in a vacuum and the goal is to be a better team next March than they are now, but man, it's still frustrating. And I don't want to be mad at ownership who've invested a lot of money in this group and in the stadium, but again....man. You just watch really good teams lose players for nothing and be willing to take that risk in order to be a really good team while money and asset management seems to be the undercurrent of this move. And not that it's *unimportant* but there's no World Series of Asset Management. Teo was such a likeable guy who - while he was still flawed - was an absolute masher and was 11th all time for home runs on the team by the time the year was up. Hopefully Swanson works out and can be the same player next year, and I'm sure a few good outings will have us penciling in the prospect into future contending teams, but man...this just kind of sucks.
Someone had to go and unfortunately teo’s declining production and increasing salary made him the guy to go. The team cannot be running it back when it continues to fall short. Show me a top LH bat in OF plus additional pitching and I’m okay with this first step in reshaping the roster
This is a weird one. I get the logic, but I'm glad you outlined the possible red flags about Dansby. Most relievers are a bit of a wild card. Not all, but he certainly doesn't have a long track record of being 'elite'. It just feels we could have got more. Sure, Teo could have walked after only one more year, but still. And they talked to multiple teams and this was the best offer/fit? Weird.
We love Teo for his personality and great offensive performance. He was a gem that kind of came out of nowhere. We got frustrated with his defence and base running brain cramps, but losing him is a massive blow to our offence - a very good offence that helped overcome our pitching issues. There had better be some decent outfielders (and I emphasise the plural) coming because Springers health is no sure thing regardless of where he plays and Gurriel doesn't inspire confidence AND we don't have much outfield depth in the minors.
Not feeling good about this one. Yet. The fact that it was largely about salary leaves a bad taste. Still, the cleaners will be happy not having to pick up all those sunflower seeds mixed in with spit and gum.

I'm still more upset about Spin Rate, but this hurts too

They could have accomplished what they need to and also kept him.
Would you want him in the OF?
Absolutely
Okay fair. I need to see our next moves to have a proper grade on this, but in isolation I don’t love it either
I don't like it!
I'm already calling him Dansby by mistake.

Thanks Andrew.
Reading your thoughts on the trade was at the top of my list when I heard about the trade.
100% with your POV - in a vacuum this isn't a great deal, once all other off-season moves are made, Teoscar should still be with Jays.
Thanks man!
