Andrew....you doing a mailbag soon? I've got a question. Do you think this Front Office would make a trade for a rental this year or are they all about multiple years of control?

Clever deal. Dickerson wasn’t having a great year before getting injured. This is all about Cimber.

Yeah I dig it - seems good for both sides - the misers in Miami shedding payroll and the Jays getting an arm to use now...

And maybe sell Grichuk at his highest value?

Dickerson or Gurriel will get moved.

This feels a LOT like the Liariano v.1 trade. Jays used some financial heft to get what actually mattered to them, and it required nothing in player/prospect capital. This is the best side of Atkins showing up again.

Happy with all of this; I would only be concerned if Dickerson is released or does not play again due to injury. He is a useful player and to get nothing from home (even if the salary is a tad high) would seem disappointing. He feels like an odd fit right now (crowded Jays OF) but I am comforted by his place on the IL and the fact that it buys Atkins time to sort other trades for relievers (using Dickerson, Gurriel or Grichuk as the return).

Will you really be that concerned if he doesn't end up playing due to injury? I would probably be more happy to see Gurriel/Grichuk play so well that there isn't room for Dickerson even if he gets healthy.

it would mean that they aren't trading Gurriel or Grichuk for more help.

I mean, I suppose but there has to be some limit on our expectations of the value we get from trading Joe Panik and a 37th round draft pick.

True. I like spinning gold from yarn :-)

May I add that they turned Panik into some minor gold here. Panik was a non-roster invite and they built him up into a trade. When you repeat this trajectory, it is the stuff on high-floor teams.

I think once Dickerson is healthy Gurriel will be shopped.

yeah, have to think with 5 big league caliber outfielders + Biggio that there is some surplus there. Hope Gurriel can get hot to bring his YTD #s back into the more reasonable range.

I'm going to assume that with his 87 mph fastball that he may also have less injury risk than the rest of the Jays Pen this year. I like deals that have a 99% chance of making your team better short term with a very low probability of regretting down the line. No brainer, more of this please.

Good point about the injury risk! And yeah, using money to get better players than you currently have is good!
