How about we really pick that corpse clean and put together a package for Jose Ramirez? It would cost a shit-ton, but that's because he's awesome and controllable for several years at an affordable price. There's 3B solved. And he's several years younger than Springer.
Bryant would be a very good 2nd option, though I am very bummed not seeing Lindor in a Jays uniform. Who would be the best FA starting pitcher after Bauer... Odorizzi, Tanaka?
From what I've been hearing, Tanaka has lost some critical velocity off his fastball in the past season, which would make his signature splitter less effective. Odorizzi would be fine, but he's a mid rotation guy, and frankly we just put up with a season of Tanner Roark and Chase Anderson so I'm not all that excited about "workhorse" type starters at the moment.
Two guys I think would be a bit riskier but would have much higher ceilings would be Corey Kluber and Cole Hamels. Both are big bounce back candidates, with Kluber being 3rd in Cy Young voting not long ago (2018). With Kay, Hatch, Merryweather, Stripling, Zeuch a few others all around, why not shoot a little higher and hope Hamels or Kluber return to form.
I agree with you Stoeten, it's probably premature to see this trade as a disaster until all the chips fall.
But on the other hand like seriously, fuck the falling chips already. I don't buy the "geez we might only get him for one year" talk. This guy was worth almost nine god damn wins in 2018. Nine. Jesus. I mean basketball only has five guys on the court, but look what Kawhi Leonard turned the Raptors into for a season. So he walks after a year and Lourdes turns into an all-star.....fine. Who remembers that if the Jays are back in the ALCS in October? What fucking major free agents are going to sign here? Ryu....and....????? A.J. Burnett?? B.J. Ryan? You are just not going to get
With all due respect to the well written and rational viewpoints of yours and others on here...I just think as a longtime fan of this team that they had make this fucking trade. Risk management, ugh.
finishing that sentence in the second paragraph......The Jays don't get very many chances to do things like this, so when you already have a good team and a deep farm system, fucking do it already and get back to the playoffs.
First want to say....great to have you back Stoeten! I was a daily visitor at DJF way back when it first started...in what? 2006 I think? Anyways awesome to read you again in this new spot. As for the recent Padres & Mets trades....I mean yeah...both those teams have made big splashy deals that have kinda felt like a punches in the gut. But as you note, there's lots of offseason left & good players on the board that would improve the team ...it's just like....what is it they say? LETTTSSSS GOOOOOO!
Stoeten, I just subscribed and my bank declined the transaction and made me verify it...really trying to keep me away from your work. Not a DJF I suppose.
I have to figure playing on the concrete at Rogers Centre is a relatively major disincentive for Springer to come north too - leading me to believe the Mets can nab him too at less than whatever the Jays offer. Hope I’m wrong. If not, it really does make missing a trade opportunity like this sting a bit more.
Hahaha. I'm pretty sure other teams are operating the same way, is the thing. The Padres and Mets just have a little more incentive to make 2021 their year.
Yes, for sure. I'm mostly joking, but we've seen what the "fuck it, let's have fun" plan can do for fans.
Thinking about it, what impact do you think the ability to have full stands and maximizing $ (or in this case, not having full stands) has on the all-in decision?
You're definitely not alone there, but there's still a lot of talent out there, and a lot of time for them to find a way to add it. I don't think they want to go into 2021 without a much improved roster either, so I'm sure something will happen one way or another. But like Shapiro has said, might be a few good guys rather than one elite one.

My understanding is that the deal was contingent on drowning 37 puppies, and only the Mets were willing to do that.

Hell yeah man. And thanks for supporting!

Hahahaha. Thank you for doing so though man!

Durability is definitely a concern there, but money usually talks -- the union doesn't like it when it doesn't!
What co-efficient does fun have in PECOTA?

I honestly don’t know!
