On Steven Matz signing with St. Louis, the Blue Jays (slightly) dwindling pitching options, the non-tender deadline being moved, CBA/lockout stuff, movement on relief market, and more!
Losing out in Matz is a bummer. That was an affordable contract for a decent pitcher. Ithey really need to sign a free agent starter as I can see us getting one via trade, but not two (unless it doesn’t involve giving up too many prospects). Losing Ray, Semien and Matz would leave a bit of a sour taste to be honest, but seems a likely outcome. Regardless, they simply can’t afford to get shut out on the starter market.
It is hard not to feel the Jays lost out a bit there holding out for Matz. DeScalfani or Wood being two of my top picks to replace him. Guess it won't matter if they sign Gausman and Ray, but that hardly seems tenable.
