The Blue Jays did an unexpected thing last week. Should it have been so unexpected, though? Here, finally, is a look back at the end of Charlie Montoyo's tenure and an attempt to make sense of it all.
Well...I’ll just join with the rest saying I, too, was on the same page about your last piece. I didn’t think he’d go, and I was content with that for all the reasons you outlined. What do you do, eh?
Apropos of this, I just got an email today from Sportsnet NOW offering the streaming package for $50 until the end of the season. Get this, it uses “fresh off firing manager Charlie Montoyo” like it’s fucking ad copy. Like they are fundraising off it. Jesus Christ.
Also they misspelled “off.” I’ll tweet you a pic of it because I don’t think I can post the screen cap here.
I was gonna kick your ass about not getting your thoughts out earlier, but feel like I'm maybe bugging you too much. I totally was on board with your first Charlie discourse article and on board with this one as well. It was a shock but probably a necessary jolt and early returns are paying off. Now get some damn arms! And I'm glad Schneider is gonna let them continue to have fun. For those who think they have too much fun...shutup. I've been watching baseball since the 80s and have never seen a group enjoy themselves and each other more. I love cutaways to the dugout where they're all laughing and hugging. It's a strength of this team.
It may be just the way the stories were written, but one thing that has been notable by its absence to me was the usually stock quote from a player saying 'this is on us not doing our jobs well enough, we let the manager down'. Maybe that was just too boring a thing for anyone to put in their piece, but it's hard not to conclude from what is out there that it was not a happy ship.
Don’t beat yourself up about it. You were not alone in thinking firing Charlie was not a sensible move. It’s still weird. Despite the narrative coming out now I still think he got thrown under the bus. I also found Atkins quote ‘I really wanted this to work with Charlie’ to be odd. It sort of implied (to me) that it was Charlie’s fault. If we end up missing out on a wildcard who’s going to be the fall guys then? Has there been any word from Charlie?
Thanks man. Yeah, Atkins' quotes were a bit odd. I didn't really go into them because he didn't say much, but definitely something there. Definitely interested by what Evan is saying above, too!

I saw you mentioned that on Twitter! Super weird!

Haha. Thanks man. Not bugging at all.
I'm totally with you on the fun stuff!

That didn't strike me until you said it, but yeah, there really wasn't a whole lot of that. Interesting.
Good observation. Bichette is the best at boring cliched comments, but not this time.
